Many professionals in Canada, such as doctors, lawyers, nurses, engineers, teachers, and many others, are required to be members of governing bodies or colleges.
These governing bodies impose standards for each profession. For example, nurses in Manitoba are governed by the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba. Their responsibility, as the professional regulatory body for Registered Nurses in Manitoba, is to protect the public. If there is a complaint against a nurse,
that complaint must be investigated by the professional regulatory body and upon investigation, the nurse shall be disciplined or the complaint be dismissed.
